Why Is My Constant Contact Email Going To Spam

Why Cant I Receive Any Mail From Constant Contact

Why Your Emails are Landing in SPAM (and How to Avoid It)

Weve received several reports where customers tell us that theyre unable to receive any mail sent by the Constant Contact mailing list company, and they suspect our spam filters are accidentally blocking the mail.

However, our filters whitelist all mail from Constant Contact, and it should not be blocked.

Instead, each time weve investigated this problem, its turned out that Constant Contact has mistakenly added the customers address to their Global Block List for some reason .

Confusingly, Constant Contact apparently doesnt show their customer the true reason for this. They just say that the message can’t be delivered or something similar.

If you arent getting messages from someone who sends using Constant Contact, feel free to contact us to double-check that we havent blocked anything. But well probably find no problem, and in that case, you or the mail sender will need to call or email Constant Contact to get them to reset your address.

Creating A Subscriber List

There are several ways to get your subscriber lists into Constant Contact: copy and paste, manually typing addresses into a form, uploading a file , directly importing them from a Gmail or Microsoft Outlook address book, or importing them from several compatible customer relationship management tools, including HubSpot CRM, Nutshell, and Pipedrive.

We uploaded four Microsoft Excel and CSV documents with overlapping contacts and the uploads were fast and mostly accurate. Constant Contact recognized most of our data fields and even merged duplicate contacts. We had to map a few fields and add a new custom field, which was easy and on par with most of our small business-focused competitors, like Campaign Monitor.

Our only quibble with Constant Contact here is that it’s a pain to edit user records. If you want to add more detail to several contacts, then you have to load each record individually and update the fields. We would prefer doing a quick edit from the main contact list, as you can with Editors’ Choice winner, Sendinblue, since it would make the process much less tedious. Of course, the best way to avoid this is to have a spreadsheet with complete information in the first place, but that’s rarely the case.

Youre Sending Emails To Inactive Addresses

I think weve all seen a message that looks like this at some point.

This means that the email was sent to an inactive address and therefore not delivered.

If you do this on a large scale and consistently send emails to inactive email addresses, spam filters will often penalize your domain or ISP.

In turn, this greatly increases the odds of your emails going to spam.

The solution?

Make sure that youre continually cleaning your email list and deleting inactive addresses.

Mailchimp Vs Constant Contact: Summary

Constant Contact’s plans start at $20/month and they have pretty solid deliverability rates. Mailchimp offers more advanced features, including better automations, reporting, email templates, and a free plan for sending 10,000 emails to up to 2,000 contacts per month. Constant Contact doesn’t have a free plan but can be trialed for 30 days.

Ease Of Use And Editor

Both Mailchimp and Constant Contact offer easy navigation and clear sections, making them ideal for beginners or people who dont want to spend too long learning how to use an extra backend. But if we had to pick a winner, wed have to say that Mailchimps editor feels more modern and faster than Constant Contacts, even if some advanced features are a bit hard to get at first

One feature we really like is the navigation menu when you create a campaign in Mailchimp. You can move forward and backward to check every step of the campaign and to make sure everything is in place.

There are some aspects to the Constant Contact design that dont feel very modern and some things are a bit hidden in the menu.

Winner: Constant Contact feels simpler because it has fewer features. But when Mailchimp do advanced features, they do them well: the campaign navigation tool, for example. This one goes to Mailchimp.

Why Is My Email Going To Spam

Why E-Mails go to Gmail Spam or Promotions Folder

There is no one simple answer for everyone to explain why emails are ending up in the spam folder, but some of the most common reasons email ends up as spam are:

  • Emailing someone before collecting their express permission
  • Your IP address has been used for spam in the past
  • Past recipients of your emails have reported them as spam
  • Your emails have a low number of people opening them, making them seem irrelevant and spammy to email clients
  • Youre using spam trigger words that make you look spammy in the inbox
  • Its been a long time since you cleaned and organized your email list

General Data Protection Regulation

Perhaps one of the most talked about pieces of privacy legislation in recent years, the General Data Protection Regulation has been top of mind for many since its inception in 2016. Its regulations cover the entirety of the European Union, meaning that anyone sending email to the region must be compliant.

The GDPR aims to grant those in the EU more control over their personal data by requiring companies to be transparent with how they use it. Businesses working within the EU must be compliant with the regulations strict data processing requirements, covering where and how personal data is stored and used, as well as ensuring the security of that data.

For more information on the GDPR, read General Data Protection Regulation : What Senders Need To Know.

California Consumer Protection Act

The California Consumer Protection Act feels like the natural descendent of the above privacy legislation, granting consumers more control over the use of their data. However, it only applies to businesses falling within specific categories. For businesses to be subject to the CCPAs requirements, only one of the following must apply:

  • The businesss annual revenue exceeds $25 million
  • The business buys, receives, or sells the personal information of 50,000 or more consumers, households, or devices
  • 50% or more of the businesss annual revenue comes from the sale of consumers personal information
  • Check out What is the California Consumer Privacy Act? For more information on how the CCPA affects sending practices.

Remember, compliance with these pieces of legislation is obligatory and that meeting the requirements of one does not guarantee compliance with another. Err on the side of caution!

You Dont Include Your Physical Address

You legally must include your physical address. That can be your current street address, a post office box that has been registered with the U.S. Postal Service, or a private mailbox registered with a commercial mail receiving agency established under Postal Service regulations.

This is usually just above your Unsubscribe button at the bottom of your email campaign:

You definitely need to add your own address, too. And if you dont have one because you work from home?

You should definitely geta PO box for business purposes, so you dont have to broadcast your home address.

    What Is An Email Bounce

Why Am I Getting Spam From My Own Email Address?

An email bounce signifies that your email was not delivered to someone on your contact list.

There are a few reasons why your email could have bounced, but its important to point out that all bounces are not the same, and therefore youll want to handle them differently.

    Soft bounces versus hard bounces

Soft bounces are usually temporary issues, including:

    • Server failure/undeliverable
    • Vacation auto replies /out of office messages

Hard bounces, on the other hand, bounce because of a permanent issue. These problems include:

    • Nonexistent email addresses
    • Out-of-date addresses

While soft bounces are something you want to keep an eye on to identify ongoing issues, theres a chance your delivery issue may resolve on its own. With hard bounces, however, youll want to remove or replace the existing email address right away.

Emailing Too Many People At Once

Mass-emailing a high number of people at the same time often results in emails landing in the spam folder. According to Levi Olmstead, Manager of Content and Community at G2 Crowd, Sending a huge bulk of emails can set off certain email triggers, especially if they’re to contacts you’ve never emailed before, or if you’re sending emails in bulk to the same email domain.

You can combat this by arranging your bulk emails to drip out periodically. Set up your email campaign to push out a handful of emails every 15 minutes instead of all at once.

    Subject Line A/b Testing

A standard practise in the industry, A/B testing for subject lines is available through Constant Contact Email Plus. If youre unfamiliar with the process, heres what the A/B testing process entails:

  • Create your email. Content, creative, all that jazz.
  • Customize the audience.Select the percentage of the contact list that will receive each subject line. So if your total list is 10,000 recipients, send version A to 1,000 people and version B to 1,000 people.
  • Set test length.Choose how long to wait6, 12, 24, or 48 hoursbefore declaring a winner. The best performing subject line automatically gets sent it to the remaining audience.
  • Track results. In real-time, track which subject line is performing better and by how much.
  • A subject line is the first impression made on recipients. In almost all cases, it dictates whether your email will be opened or not. Make it count.

Low Open Rates From Past Emails

Major email service providers like Gmail and Yahoo look at user engagement to determine if your messages should go to the inbox or spam. So, if your sales emails arent getting opened, youre in for double trouble.

“If email service providers see that a very low percentage of your subscribers are engaging with your messages, that’s going to tell them that people don’t care about your content and don’t want to read your messages, says Matt Paulson, founder of .

The fix? Do everything possible to encourage people to interact with your emails. As Paulson advises: Use intriguing subject lines like strange question? and bad news? to compel people to open your messages to see what’s inside. Also, use clear calls to action in your messages like Reply to this email and let me know if you are interested or a link that says Click here to learn more that encourage people to engage.

Youre Not Paying Enough Attention To Email List Hygiene

Email list hygiene may sound like a funny term. But its a process that can have a massive impact on your email deliverability and keeping your messages out of the spam folders.

Email list hygiene management is about identifying the engaged subscribers, re-engaging those whove become unresponsive, and getting rid of those who hold no business value.

And whom do we mean, when were saying that theyre holding no business value? Not just those who are no longer engaging with your communication, click the unsubscribe button, or mark your emails as spam. We also mean those whove provided the wrong or fake email accounts or those whove abandoned their mailboxes.

Now, you may be thinking that this isnt such a big deal. But its worth mentioning that the email list churn eats up 25-30% of your database every year. And according to a recent study by Return Path, on average, marketers lose 44% of their new subscribers within the first twelve months of their subscription. And if a big part of that churn goes unnoticed because people dont actually click that unsubscribe button then were looking at a potential reason why your emails end up in spam.

So what should you do? To keep your list clean and hygienic you should make sure your entire list-building process is flawless. That your data is collected and transferred to your email marketing software properly, and ideally, that you also use confirmed opt-in .
