Your Email List Is Not Fresh
1 in 1000 people will mistype their email address, and you will never hear from them again. That equates to over one million dollars lost in return on investment.
To prevent wrong, extra, missing or swapped letters in your customers’ email addresses, you can use a code inventory.
- If the function finds something that looks like a typo, it will return a suggestion
- If the function doesnt find a typo, it returns an empty string
Actually, it is a very simple process! A typical email validation flow looks like this:
In the end, you don’t just lose a customer, but also your emails are also at risk of being flagged as spam for those who actively engage in your email marketing campaigns.
Additionally, emails can be inactive for other reasons even if they have given you their correct emails
- They may not be using their emails in your list anymore, or
- They may quit their jobs so their business mail addresses become invalid.
Therefore, email list cleaning is something you should definitely do for a high-quality email list. If you dont do that regularly, this could be the reason for your problems!
You should update your email list and remove inactive subscribers who have not engaged in the past 6 months or more. Also, you should try re-engaging them. Ask them if theyd like to update their preferences and information. This way, you can clean up your list. By eliminating the bad data, youll achieve the goals you have eventually.

Your Emails Dont Have A Plain
Spammers often dont bother including a plain-text version of their HTML emails, so if youre not including one in your emails either, some spam filters and firewalls might find it more likely that youre a spammer, too.
So include a plain-text version with every email you send. This doesnt just help prove to spam filters that youre a legitimate sender but is also valuable to recipients who don’t view the HTML version within their inbox. Plain-text emails also play a crucial role in making your emails more accessible because screen readers often rely on plain-text emails to read your messages.
Most email service providers make it easy to add a plain-text version when you create your email. If youre using Postmark, you can easily toggle between the HTML and text view in the email editor, making it easy to add and edit the text version of your email.
You Used Spam Trigger Words

Audience Wants Html Format Emails
Maybe your segmented audience prefers to get emails in HTML format and your emails don’t follow that format!
In that case, you should
- Make sure that your HTML code is simple and clean. Stay away from complexity.
- Never send image-only emails with no text and of course, compress them for the ideal size.
- Use fonts that work across platforms, unknown fonts dont work everywhere.
- Make sure that your emails are mobile responsive.
Use A Mail Testing Service
A mail testing service, like mail.tester will test the spammyness of your email and give you a score. Its a good way to check the viability of your messages potential delivery before you send it out to real recipients.
But theres no way to guarantee that all your messages will get to all the inboxes you intend to get them to. Every mail filter is different, and even if you get a perfect score with a mail tester, although helpful, may still mean you get filtered to spam or junk via another filter.
If you follow the pointers above, and follow best practice when it comes to email messaging, particular marketing messages, you at least stand a better chance of your messages being delivered to inboxes. But if you use a mail tester too, even better, youll potentially get to know what needs to be fixed beforehand.

You Dont Keep A Clean Email List #
Spammers and phishers typically dont have a record of great list keeping. They shamelessly scrape email addresses from somewhere, dont care about invalid email addresses or bounces, and dont care about engagement as long as a few clueless victims fall for their traps.
If inbox providers assume similar questionable list-building techniques for your brand, theyll place you into the spam folder as well. Thats why a clean email list is the foundation of healthy email delivery. To keep your email list healthy, follow these tips:
- Only add opted-in subscribers to your list. Adding recipients to your mailing list who never agreed to receive emails from you is a common shortcut to grow your list, but its also a path that can lead straight to the spam folder.
- Never ever purchase or borrow email lists. Inbox providers find this practice shady, and theyll punish senders who send to purchased lists accordingly. The same is true for scraping email addresses from the web. Just dont do it.
- Remove recipients who unsubscribed and keep a close eye on your email bounces.
- If subscribers arent engaging with your emails, remove them from your email list. Inbox providers will notice if a large portion of your subscribers never open your emails or click any linksand its not a great look.
The Top Reasons Emails Are Flagged As Spam
Elements of the Email.
If you find an email in your junk folder that shouldnt be there it very well could be because the individual email triggered one of these common triggers:
- There are too many images in the email.
- The email uses SPAM trigger words .
- The email does not include a physical address.
- There are too many attachments in the email.
This level of filtering essentially determines if the contents of the email are wanted or unwanted.
The senders domain reputation
Every IP address is rated by each ISP, so if that IP address has been flagged for spam, fraudulent activity, or viruses, then any email from that domain will be flagged as well.
Additionally, ISPs look at domain-level authentication to ensure that the email is actually being sent from who it says its being sent from. This level of review does not look at the content within the email.
Your engagement with the message
ISPs constantly learn from your actions how you do and dont interact with the emails you receive. Have you ever noticed that, if you immediately delete marketing emails from a company you are not interested in, youll stop seeing those emails after a while? Those emails havent disappeared into thin air, theyre still getting to you, but your ISP has learned that you dont want them and placed them in your junk folder.
Common triggers for this filter are:
- Opening or clicking on a message
- Enabling images
- Forwarding a message

Do Spammers Know If You Open Their Email
Can spammers tell if you open an email? Spammers can tell if you open an email when you or your email application interact with their message. When your webmail or mobile email app automatically downloads remote resources like photos or graphics, the spam sender immediately knows their content was viewed.
Heres Why Emails Go To Spam
Email has been and continues to be an absolute workhorse for marketers.
Research from the Direct Marketing Association and Demand Metric found, Email had a median ROI of 122 percentmore than four times higher than other marketing formats including social media, direct mail, and paid search.
So it definitely gets the job done.
But theres an issue that all email marketers must contend with and thats falling into the dreaded black hole that is the spam folder.
Return Paths 2017 Deliverability Benchmark Report discovered that 20 percent of all commercial emails wind up as spam.
And lets be honest. An email is almost always a goner at the point.
I mean how many people are actually going to take the time to sift through their spam folder to see if maybe, just maybe your email was inadvertently diverted there?
My guess would be zero.
This is hugely problematic because the average open rate is only 32 percent and even lower for certain industries.
So when you factor in emails going to spam, that number diminishes even more.
Right now Im going to discuss some common reasons why emails go to spam and how to ensure that yours dont wind up there.

Keep Images From Loading Automatically
Spammers use the email image-loading feature to determine whether your email account is active. Here’s how to keep images from loading automatically:
- On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > Mail, then turn off Load Remote Images.
- In Mail on your Mac, choose Mail > Preferences. In the Viewing tab, turn off “Load remote content in messages.”
- In iCloud Mail, click the gear icon in the sidebar, then choose Preferences. Click General, then turn off “Load remote content in messages.” Then click Done.
Your Email List Is Out
Over time, your email subscribers may change their email address, stop using the account, or go off the grid. Whatever the reason, sending emails to addresses no longer in use can contribute to emails marked as spam.
As a result, you should regularly evaluate your email list for subscribers who no longer engage with you.
An engagement campaign is a quick way to see who is still invested in your emails.
This is usually an offer that requests them to opt back into your email list. Sometimes, a special offer may be included with an engagement campaign to build more excitement.
If subscribers do not respond to the engagement campaign, then they can be removed from your email list. This helps increase your open rate, removes inactive accounts, and allows you to focus more on subscribers still engaged with your brand.
Regularly completing this kind of email list review ensures your list remains healthy for the long term.

Your Emails Are Breaking The Rules
In an effort to reduce spam and make consumers more aware of who is contacting them with marketing messages, governments around the world have enacted digital contact laws and regulations.
In the United States, these regulations are described as CAN-SPAM. Businesses that want to contact email subscribers for marketing purposes must follow these rules.
For example, you must include your business physical address as a part of your email. Customers need to know where you can be found, and this information must be clearly shown in your marketing campaign.
Also, a visible, easy-to-find opt-out button or link needs to be included with every email. There are also rules about creating false or misleading headlines.
While you may be hesitant to clearly show an unsubscribe link, being in compliance with CAN-SPAM is essential. Be sure to offer great content as part of your email marketing campaigns, and you wont have to worry about people choosing to unsubscribe in large numbers.
