But when you switched over to Flodesk, now your emails are coming via Flodesks servers. This is something new and unexpected. Your subscribers email provider may wonder if it’s a hack. And to protect their subscriber’s inbox, they may deliver the message to the junk folder.

Set Up The Spf Record Between Your Domain And Mailchimps Servers

Over the past 3 months, Ive gotten a pretty good understanding of how email campaigns work and how to fight spam. I spent about two weeks redoing our transactional mailers at Nudge Rewards and, more recently, launching our Toronto Review website, d. In those two weeks I was able to sanitize our mailers, improve our spam assassin score to a perfect 10/10 and increase delivery rates to subscribers.

Your Content Triggers Spam Filters

Spam filters check for certain words . If an email gets enough hits or contains those words in addition to some of the other items on this list, it can end up in spam folders. Spam trigger keywords can include:

  • Multiple exclamation points or dollar signs in a row
  • Words with unnecessary spaces or punctuation
  • Words that are in ALL CAPS

Why The Mailchimp Campaign Was Identified As Spam

Authenticate Your Domain And Spf Records

To authenticate your domain and verify MailChimps servers so that your mail can send reliably, youll need access to your domains DNS records and your MailChimp account:

· In MailChimp, go to Account Settings Verified Domains. Click View Setup Instructions to view your domain authentication .

· In your domain, go to the DNS Zone Editor and view the DNS records for your domain.

· Create a new CNAME and modify the existing TXT record for your domain, one at a time. You should have access to the values for each record from the first step. The key here is modifying the existing SPF record as your domain can only have a single SPF record. Youll still need to create a new CNAME record.

· DKIM: Create a CNAME record for k1._domainkey.example.com with this value: dkim.mcsv.net. If you need to insert a TTL for the record, follow your other records I set the TTL to 144000.

· SPF: Modify the TXT record for example.com. Your domain can only have a single SPF record. Youll want to modify the SPF record that already exists in your DNS records and combine them like so :

-all: mails sent from hosts not specifically allowed are not permitted to send mails. ?all: means any not specified host is neutral and nothing can be said about the validity of it.

Domain providers account interfaces vary greatly and so it’s not possible to go through them all here. However, accessing domain DNS Records usually runs as follows

Log into your domain account > domains > yourdomain > DNS > DNS Records > Add DNS Record.

In this section of your domain provider account, you’ll choose add a CNAME Record and a Text record.

Adding The CNAME Record

The CNAME record consists of a subdomain of which the following precedes the primary domain

k1._domainkey

The result will look like this

k1._domainkey.yourdomain.com

The secondary element of the CNAME is the âcanonicalâ. It is sometimes called something else such as âpoints toâ, depending on the domain host. The following is what you enter in that field.

dkim.mcsv.net

Finally, edit the TTL to 600 from the default value . This will process the CNAME faster.

Save the CNAME Record.

You Have Low Mailbox Usage

Reason : Recipient Server Block

Occasionally, an email recipient’s company email server will block MailChimp emails and the emails will bounce back. Sometimes it looks like spam to the company server if a lot of employees get the same marketing email at once. After a hard bounce happens, MailChimp will no longer send emails to the address to protect your reputation as a sender.

What you’ll find is that the email addresses aren’t actually missing – they are still in your MailChimp list, they’re just not being counted. They are actually what MailChimp calls “cleaned.” You can see this label by clicking on the email address in the MailChimp list. What this means is that the email soft bounced a few times and then hard bounced, so MailChimp decided that it wasn’t going to send emails to that address anymore to protect your sender reputation.

If you notice two or more emails that are “cleaned” have the same domains , this is almost certainly the case.

The solution to this is for the members to work with their tech team to fix it on their end. Members can give their IT department this link to whitelist MailChimp emails.

Whitelisting lets the server know that their emails are okay to receive. If that is not an option, the members will need to use personal email addresses to continue receiving marketing emails from your association.
