Once An Email Has Been Sent You Cant Take It Back
Its a bitter pill to swallow, but you generally cant unsend an email once its been sent. If it arrives in the recipients inbox, its out of your hands .
There are third-party tools, including Preava Protect, that can filter your outgoing emails, which reduces the risk of human error. If the email contains a mistake or a security risk, you can reconsider whether you want to send it.
Another option is to use the Unsend feature in Gmail and Outlook. This option doesnt filter or correct your emails, but merely delays them. The sending process is put off, and this gives you a chance to look at the message and change your mind about sending it.
Outlook/Microsoft Exchange also has a recall option. This feature provides the one big exception to the you can never take back emails rule. It lets you change or delete your messages even after theyve arrived in the recipients inbox. However, you can only recall emails sent to coworkers, and you have to act quickly before the recipient reads the message and there are some other caveats as well.
Lets go through the ways you can do damage control when you send an email and want to take it back, starting with the most common option.
Recall Or Replace An Email Message That You Sent
With message recall, a message that you sent is retrieved from the mailboxes of the recipients who havent yet opened it. You can also substitute a replacement message. For example, if you forgot to include an attachment, you can try to retract the message, and then send a replacement message that has the attachment.
Message recall is available after you click Send and is available only if both you and the recipient have a Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Exchange email account in the same organization.
Recall An Email Even After 30 Seconds
Unfortunately, you cannot recall an email after 30 seconds in Gmail as thats the maximum allowed delay in settings. However, you can send the email in the confidential mode, where it will automatically expire after a set time.
You can set an email to expire after one day, one week, one month, and so on. Once the email is delivered, all its contents will automatically expire after the set time. You can also recall the email earlier by removing access manually.

Even though the function itself is called Undo sending, what actually happens behind the scenes is that Gmails server merely delays sending the mail to the listed recipient until the specified Send cancellation period is completed.
So, what actually happens is that you set the mail to wait up in a queue for a few short seconds, just enough to catch yourself and retrieve the message before it gets processed and delivered to the recipient.
Once the mail reaches the recipient, there is no take-back. Now that, we are clear about the unsending topic, there are two ways to give yourself time to reconsider before actually sending an email.
Tip #1: Use the Confirm before sending option
Available for Android only, heres how to enable this option. Launch the Gmail app and then tap the menu button in the top left. Scroll down and tap Settings. Tap General settings. And then scroll down and enable Confirm before sending using its toggle. Done.
