Outlooks Perfectly Imperfect Junk Filters
Unfortunately, many users reported that changing the junk email settings on the desktop app doesnt affect the spam filtering level on Outlook.com. In other words, even if you set the filter to No automatic filtering, some emails will still land in the junk folder.
The worst part is that even if you manually mark emails as Not junk, the web app continues to send future messages from the same senders to the Junk folder.
As a result, many users complained that Microsoft is forcing its spam filters on them by not allowing users to disable the junk filters on Outlook.com. Some users decided to switch to a different email client for this reason alone.

Promotional emails are the curse of our modern era. Its hard to avoid them because there are still many websites and services that require you to explicitly opt out from receiving them, and some simply dont care. The frequency of promotional emails can be so high that it doesnt take a long time to reach storage limits in Outlook, despite the fact that Microsoft offers 15 GB of email storage space per free Outlook.com account and 50 GB of space for Office 365 Home and Office 365 Personal subscribers.
In the United States, the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act of 2003 , mandates that a visible and operable unsubscribe mechanism is present in all emails and specifies that consumer opt-out requests are honored within 10 business days. European GDPR takes things to the next level, requiring clear proof of opt-in from email recipients. As a result of these and other laws, most promotional emails today contain an unsubscribe link somewhere at the bottom of the message. All you have to do to unsubscribe is click on it.

The Top Reasons Emails Are Flagged As Spam
Elements of the Email.
If you find an email in your junk folder that shouldnt be there it very well could be because the individual email triggered one of these common triggers:
- There are too many images in the email.
- The email uses SPAM trigger words .
- The email does not include a physical address.
- There are too many attachments in the email.
This level of filtering essentially determines if the contents of the email are wanted or unwanted.
The senders domain reputation
Every IP address is rated by each ISP, so if that IP address has been flagged for spam, fraudulent activity, or viruses, then any email from that domain will be flagged as well.
Additionally, ISPs look at domain-level authentication to ensure that the email is actually being sent from who it says its being sent from. This level of review does not look at the content within the email.
Your engagement with the message
ISPs constantly learn from your actions how you do and dont interact with the emails you receive. Have you ever noticed that, if you immediately delete marketing emails from a company you are not interested in, youll stop seeing those emails after a while? Those emails havent disappeared into thin air, theyre still getting to you, but your ISP has learned that you dont want them and placed them in your junk folder.

Dont Share Your Email Address
Do you know how spammers get your email address in the first place? They usually find it posted online! We understand that it can be tricky, especially if you have a website or maintain an active online presence but try not to publish your email address online. If you absolutely must share it with others, at least disguise it by substituting the @ symbol with the word at. This wont fool all email address scrapers used by spammers, but it will throw off a good percentage of them.
When you do give your email address to someone else, pay attention to your inbox and monitor the number of spam emails you receive. A major uptick in the frequency of spam emails could mean that the person with whom youve shared your address has published it somewhere. When registering on websites, consider using a disposable email address instead of your real one. There are many services that let you create as many disposable email addresses as you want, and most of them are free.

Your Subject Line Is Preventing Engagement
The subject line is the first impression your emails make on subscribers, and its important the impression is a good one.
Subject lines no longer play a major part in spam/junk folder determination. Instead, all major mailbox providers now weight engagement as their top influencer for where your email ends up. The takeaway: subject lines may not influencer providers, but they do influence users: an exciting subject line encourages opens and clicks, which then lend to positive signals to mailbox providers.
The takeaway: high engagement means your emails will probably continue to get through. With low engagement? Your emails could end up as spam or junk. Thats why testing and personalizing subject lines on a regular basis is so important.
Writing a good subject line is your first line of defense against these filters. Avoid sending subject lines that may look spammy to readers: words written in all caps, punctuated with numerous exclamation points, or using notable spammy terms like guaranteed winner and free gift. Writing an effective subject line can help your emails look trustworthy to users, thus elevating engagement.
Personalizing your subject line is also a great way to stand out to readers. In fact, personalized emails are 26% more likely to be opened by subscribers.
