How To Set Up a Free Google Gmail Email Account

In modern versions of Outlook, regular consumers do not need to go through various email settings to setup a Gmail account in Outlook. The app can quickly get the necessary settings and add a Gmail account to Outlook. Still, sometimes you might need to manually configure a Gmail account in Outlook 2016 to send and receive emails using the most popular mail service in the world.

Again, default Outlook settings for Gmail should work for every consumer. If you encountered an error and cannot setup Gmail in Outlook, follow the instructions below.

On your computer, launch your preferred browser and go to the Gmail website. Log in with your account.

You need to open settings and make sure Gmail is properly configured to work in Outlook 2016. Click the button with a gear icon in the upper-right corner of the window.

Switch to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.

Check the IMAP access section and make sure the status says IMAP is enabled. You can enable POP, but we do not recommend using this outdated protocol. Stick to IMAP like the rest of modern world. Sure, if you have valid reasons to use POP and you want to switch to POP, make sure the corresponding options are enabled click Disable IMAP.

That is it. As you can see, you do not need change a lot of settings to prepare your Gmail account. All it takes to setup a Gmail in Outlook is to ensure the previously mentioned settings are on.

Check Gmail Through Other Email Platforms

Set up IMAP and change your SMTP settings to read Gmail messages in other mail clients, like Microsoft Outlook and Apple Mail. When you use IMAP, you can read your Gmail messages on multiple devices, and messages are synced in real time. You can also read Gmail messages using POP.

Important: To avoid temporarily locking yourself out of your account, make sure you don’t exceed 2500 MB per day for IMAP downloads and 500 MB per day for IMAP uploads. If you’re setting up a single IMAP account on multiple computers, try taking a break between each setup.

Set Up Gmail With Older Versions Of Outlook And Other Clients

Important: We recommend using Gmail only with mail clients that support OAuth. Your Google account is less secure when it’s linked to mail clients that dont support OAuth.

If you must use Gmail with older versions of Outlook, or other mail clients that don’t support OAuth, follow the steps in this section

These are examples of mail clients that dont support OAuth:

Outlook versions earlier than Outlook 2016
Apple iOS Mail versions earlier than Mail 8.3
Apple Mail versions earlier than Mail 9.3

Open all | Close all

Choose A Google Account Type

Important: When you create a Google Account for your business, you can turn business personalization on. A business account also makes it easier to , which helps improve your business visibility and manage your online information.

When you create a Google Account, we ask for some personal info. By providing accurate info, you can help keep your account secure and make our services more useful.

In the “Username” field, enter a username.

Enter and confirm your password.

Click Next.

Optional: Add and verify a phone number for your account.

Click Next.

Click Use my current email address instead.

Enter your current email address.

Click Next.

Verify your email address with the code sent to your existing email.

Click Verify.

Google Accounts And Two

If you have enabled Two-Factor Authentication for your Gmail account , you will encounter some issues and errors when setting up Gmail in Outlook 2016 and earlier. Do not disable Two-Factor Authentication. Instead, use the app-specific password to add a Gmail account to Outlook 2016 and older versions.

App-specific passwords are disposable, which means you can use one app-specific password only one time. Once you have set up Gmail in Outlook 2016, Google will stop accepting that password. Even if someone figures out your temporary app-specific password, they will not access your Google account.

Here is how to create an app-specific password in Gmail for Outlook:

Go to the on your computer. Log in with your account.

Go to the Security tab and click App passwords.

From the drop-down list, select Others. Give a new password a proper name, so you can further understand its purpose. For example, Outlook on my PC.

Press Generate. In the next window, you will see an app-specific password. It consists of 16 characters separated into groups of 4 characters.

Copy this password and paste it without spaces in here:

After you do this, Outlook will properly connect to your Gmail.

For your information. You do not need to generate an app-specific password if you want to set up Outlook 2019 and newer. The latest Outlook version supports Two-Factor Authentication and has zero problems connecting to your Gmail account with 2FA enabled.

Sorry We Could Not Sign You Into Google Imap

Although the instructions above should work automatically and flawlessly, sometimes they dont. You may get the error message, Sorry, We Could Not Sign You Into Google IMAP. Thats when we need to dig into the Gmail IMAP settings in Outlook.

In Outlook, click on the File tab in the top-left corner.

In Account Information, click on Account Settings, and then Server Settings.

The IMAP Account Settings window will open, showing the Incoming mail settings. Check to make sure the settings match the following:User name: your Gmail addressServer: imap.gmail.comEncryption method: SSL/TLSRequire logon using Secure Password Authentication : UncheckedThis is highlighted below because it is the most likely cause of the connection not working.

Expand the Outgoing mail section and ensure the settings match the following, and then click Next:Server: smtp.gmail.comPort: 465Encryption method: SSL/TLSServer timeouts: Default is usually fine. If youre experiencing timeouts, slide it further to the right.Require logon using Secure Password Authentication : UncheckedThis is highlighted below because it is the most likely cause of the connection not working.My outgoing server requires authentication: Checked, and select Use same settings as my incoming server.

An updating window will show, briefly.

A new window will open from Google. It should be pre-filled with your e-mail address. Make sure its correct and click Next.

In the window that opens:

Enter your Gmail password.

Importing Your Domain Email Account Into Gmail

Open your Gmail account.

At the top right, click the Settings icon.

Select Settings.

Select the Accounts and Import tab.

In the Check mail from other accounts section, click Add a POP3 mail account you own.

Enter your domain email address, then click Next Step.

Enter your account username. Your username is your full email address

Enter the email accounts password.

Enter your accounts POP server information. This is the Incoming Server information on your View Email Client Info settings. Make sure you enter the correct mail server name and the corresponding port number.

If you are using the Secure SSL/TLS settings, make sure you select Port 995 from the Port drop-down menu.

If you are using the Non-SSL settings, select Port 110 from the Port drop-down menu.

Select the desired options:

Leave a copy of retrieved messages on the server check the box if you are also accessing your emails on another email client or device , otherwise the emails in your domain email account will be deleted and you will only be able to access them in Gmail

Always use a secure connection when retrieving mail if you are using the Secure SSL/TLS settings, then you need to check the box. If you are using the Non-SSL settings, then uncheck the box.

Label incoming messages check the box if you have more than one email account set up in your Gmail this way, you can easily see which emails in your inbox come from your domain email account.

When ready, click Add Account.

Retrieve Pop3 / Smtp Addresses

To get started, you will need to access your web server to find out what your server addresses are.

The start menu should be sacred

For incoming email, the address will generally look like pop..net , without square brackets. For example, my email server hides these addresses in the Server Settings section of its email management site.

For outgoing email, youll want to write down the address of anything that appears to have the acronym SMTP. Again, in this example, GoDaddy uses smtpout.secureserver.net to handle any requests for outgoing or sent mail.

How to set up a google account

If you want to create a new Gmail account for others, such as a relative, the process is the same. However, there are some important things to take note of during the setup process.

Firstly, make sure you are not adding the account as an additional address to your existing Google account. Either sign out of Google, or use your browser in incognito mode to start a fresh account for the other person.

When entering the details for the other person’s account, make sure to enter the details of the person the account is for, rather than your own. Also, make sure that the username reflects that person’s desired username.

When verifying the account by phone, make sure that the person sends you the verification code so that you can complete the setup for them. You can also use your own number for the verification step and just remove it from the account afterwards.

You will also need to provide them with the login username and password for their account so that they can sign in.

If they have an existing email account on another platform, set this as the recovery email for the Gmail account. This allows them to reset the password after you’ve handed over the account, as well as recover the password if they forget it.

Setup Gmail In Windows 10 Mail App

To get started, lets setup the Mail app first. The great thing about the three apps in Windows 10 is that they are all integrated. Once you add your Google account to the one app, it will automatically be added to the other two apps too. In addition, each app has links to the other apps in the sidebar, so its super easy to switch between the apps.

To open the Mail app, just click on Start and type in Mail. The top result should be Mail Trusted Microsoft Store app.

The Mail app is split into three sections: on the left is the sidebar where you will see your list of email accounts and folders, the middle is where a short description of the all the emails in that folder will appear and the right pane will show the full individual email.

Click on Accounts in the left sidebar and then click on Add account in the right panel that appears. A popup dialog will appear where you can choose your email service provider.

You can add an Outlook.com account, Exchange account, Yahoo email, iCloud email or any other POP or IMAP enabled email account. In our case, we will select Google. Go ahead and enter your Google credentials and click Allow to let Windows access your email, calendars and contacts.

If all went well, you should get a successful message indicating that the account has been added to Windows.

All of the email from your Gmail inbox should now show up inside the Mail app. Youll notice that by default, the Mail app only shows you the Inbox folder and thats it.

How To Set Up Your New Gmail Account

Step 1. First things first, you need to head over to gmail.com.

Step 2. Click on the button that says Create Account.

Step 3. After that, the sign-up form will appear. Youll need to fill in all the details it requests: first name, last name, a new username, and a new password.

Step 4. Next, youll be asked to enter a phone number to verify your account. This is because Google uses a two-step verification process to boost security. You can find out more about two-step verification here.

Step 5. You should now receive a text message with a verification code from Google. If this hasnt been delivered within a few minutes, you can use the automated call system instead.

Step 6. Once youve verified your account, you will see a form that asks for some personal information. This includes a recovery email, your birthday, and your gender. If youre not comfortable giving these or want to find out why Google is asking for this information, there is plenty of information on offer during the sign up.

Step 7. You now need to accept Googles Terms of Service and their Privacy Policy its highly recommended that you review both of these in detail before clicking I Agree.

Step 8. You should now have your new Gmail account.

Enter Account Settings Manually

If Mail can’t find your email settings, then you need to enter them manually. Tap Next, then follow these steps:

Choose IMAP or POP for your new account. If you arent sure which one to choose, contact your email provider.

Enter the information for Incoming Mail Server and Outgoing Mail Server. Then tap Next. If you don’t have this information, try to look it up.

If your email settings are correct, tap Save to finish. If the email settings are incorrect, you’ll be asked to edit them.

If you still can’t set up your email account or save your email settings, contact your email provider.

How to Set up a Gmail Account As a Pop Account: 11 Steps

In the top lefthand corner, open the Settings cog and choose Settings.

Click Accounts.

Locate the ‘Check mail from other accounts’ setting and click Add a mail account.

Enter your Email address.

Enter your full email address as the Username.

Enter Password for your email account.

Enter the POP Server. This will vary depending on if you choose to use the Always use a secure connection option

Without SSL: This will be your domain name preceded by “mail.”

With SSL: This will be your servers hostname. Also make sure the port is changed to 995. If you don’t know your servers hostname, go to your cpanel. On the left side you will see a section called stats. Click the expand stats link if it is present. The hostname will be shown in the list of stats.

Choose any additional options you may want.
