Setting Up An Email Account On Your Kindle Fire Tablet
3 Minutes, 6 Seconds to Read
The following article shows how to set up an email account on your Kindle Fire tablet. Each tablet can be set up to view a single or multiple email accounts using the POP3 or IMAP protocol available with your InMotion Hosting account. Like any good email client, you can use either secure or non-secure settings. The tutorial will explain these settings and display the options that you can select.
Why Is Email Encryption Important
Email encryption is important because it protects you from a data breach. If the hacker cant read your message because its encrypted, they cant do anything with the information. Since 2013, over 13 billion data records have been lost or stolen. The average cost of a data breach in 2018 is $3.86 million. This number has grown by 6.4% since 2017. Data breaches can be costly because they take a while to identify. In 2018, the mean time to identify a breach was 197 days and the mean time to contain it was 69 days. Email encryption is a preventative measure you can take to avoid being part of a cybersecurity statistic.
Level 3 Tales From The Encrypted
Once you have Thunderbird installed, you need to set up PGP encryption. To do this, download and install the Enigmail extension. When you encrypt your email, youre placing the postcard emails you normally send into an envelope. You wont be anonymouspeople can still see the from/to addressesbut the information you send will be unreadable to anyone but the recipient.
What PGP does is set a key for you on your computer. Youre also given a key to give anyone you want to email. Once you exchange keys with someone, you can securely email each other. If anyone intercepts the email, theyll see only gibberish unless they have both keys to unlock the email. Even if one of your keys is compromised, they wont have the other, and therefore cannot read your email. This encryption is mathematically uncrackable for the time being, and it is the same level of encryption used by every government and corporation in the world. If its good enough for them, why not you?

Encrypt Emails In Popular Email Clients
Many of the big-name web-based email providers will allow users to encrypt their emails using either one of the two main email encryption protocols, S/MIME or OpenPGP. The downside is that it may not always be a simple or straightforward process to do so directly from within your web-based email providers interface, and you may have to pay for it.
For example, if you want to send a secure email on Gmail, you will first need to enable S/MIME encryption by signing into Gmail using a GSuite administrator account. GSuite accounts are primarily for business purposes, but you could theoretically set up an account for your personal use. The other issue with this is that the recipient you are emailing will also need to have S/MIME encryption activated in order for this to work.
Similarly, Outlook also supports S/MIME encryption and youll need to enable it manually, but before you do so, youll need to obtain a certificate from your organizations administrator. This, admittedly, isnt the most streamlined process, nor is it likely to be a very practical solution for most personal email users. Why Use A Secure Email Service
If you’ve read this article, the pros of using a secure mail provider should be obvious to you. However, if you still have doubts, make sure to take a look at the following arguments before returning to Gmail:
- Protect your messages. Gmail, Hotmail, and other mainstream services don’t encrypt your messages after they reach their servers. This means they can read them and make it easier for hackers to read too.
- Hide your metadata. If your regular mail service encrypts your messages, that doesn’t automatically mean hiding the header with metadata. It often includes your and recipient’s email address, device, browser, and network.
- Don’t be a product. If your email is great but free, chances are you are the product. Still, too few users know that Gmail actively scans your mailbox for keywords and uses them to show personalized ads. This way, by using Gmail, you’re helping Google make money out of your data.
- Store your messages in a privacy-friendly location. The US and any Fourteen Eyes intelligence-sharing country might one day decide to see your inbox. If the provider’s servers are in one of those countries, doing so will be much easier than getting access to some nuclear bunker in Switzerland .
Finally, always remember that your mail service is as secure as your chosen password. All end-to-end encryption and no-logs policies go through the roof if anyone can crack your password in a few minutes.

Best Practices For Protecting Your Email
Nine out of 10 viruses that infect computers come from email attachments. No level of encryption will protect you from being careless. Its therefore very important to scan all email attachments before opening them, especially from senders you dont recognize. Viruses disguised as Microsoft Office documents are especially common. Many email clients, including Gmail, will automatically scan attachments for you, but others will require you do so manually.
Dont click on links in emails from unreliable sources. In fact, just dont open emails altogether if they dont look trustworthy. A spam blocker will go a long way toward avoiding these.
If you email a large group of people, use BCC so spammers cant get a hold of the list. Conversely, if someone includes you in a long list of CCed email addresses, dont hit reply all without carefully considering the alternatives.
Finally, set a strong password on your email account. Read through our guidelines if youre not sure what constitutes a strong password or use a password strength checker if youre still unsure how strong yours is.

How To Encrypt Email
Email was one of the earliest forms of communication on the internet, and if youre reading this you almost undoubtedly have at least one email address. Critics today decry the eventual fall of email, but for now its still one of the most universal means of communicating with other people that we have.
One of the biggest problems with this cornerstone of electronic communication is that it isnt very private. By default, most email providers do not provide the means to encrypt messages or attachments. This leaves email users susceptible to hackers, snoops, and thieves.
So you want to start encrypting your email? Well, lets start by saying that setting up email encryption yourself is not the most convenient process. Not only must the sender have the means to encrypt an email, but the recipient of your encrypted email must have the means to decrypt it. You dont need a degree in cryptography or anything, but it will take a dash of tech savvy. Well walk you through the process in this article.

Types Of Email Encryption
There are two main types of email encryption methods you need to know exist: S/MIME and PGP/MIME. In order for the recipient to decrypt an email encrypted by the sender, both parties must use the same type of encryption.
S/MIME is built into most OSX and iOS devices. When you receive an email sent from a Macbook or iPhone, youll sometimes see a 5-kilobyte attachment called smime.p7s. This attachment verifies the identity of the receiver so only he or she can read the email.
- Recipients must be in senders organization or have received at least one signed email from the sender in the past
- S/MIME relies on a centralized authority to choose the encryption algorithm and key size
- Easy to maintain
- Harder to set up with web-based email clients like Gmail
- More widely distributed thanks to Apple and Outlook built-in support
The other heavyweight in email encryption is PGP/MIME, which is what were going to focus on in the latter part of this tutorial.
- Recipient must have both public and private encryption keys, and the public key must be available to sender
- Relies on a decentralized, distributed trust model
- Fairly easy to use with web-based email clients
- Free to get a certificate, which S/MIME is usually not
- Choose how you encrypt and how well-encrypted the messages you receive must be
- Not widely supported by email clients, so requires third-party tools
To Prevent Email Providers From Monitoring Emails And Sharing Data With Advertisers
Email providers have been known to monitor and scan users email messages to facilitate targeted advertising efforts. Though in 2017 Gmail apparently discontinued the practice of scanning emails for advertising purposes, that doesnt necessarily mean that Google has ceased scanning emails for other purposes. For example, Gmails “Smart Reply feature offers relevant suggestions for quick, canned replies to an email youve received based on the contents of its message.
So if you dont want your email provider to scan or monitor your email messages for advertising or any other purposes, then youll want to send secure emails that effectively keep the contents of those messages private and inaccessible to anyone other than you and the party you are communicating with via email.
