So, how do you send encrypted emails? Well, it entirely depends on the email service provider youre using. The process is different in Gmail than in Outlook or Yahoo. Below, well detail the specific steps for each one:

The good thing about Gmail is that it has a built-in encryption feature. However, to send an encrypted email, both you and the email recipient must have the feature enabled. If the person you send the email to doesnt enable the encryption feature, the email you sent wont be encrypted.

Given this, you must make sure that theyve got encryption enabled on their end.

Enabling encryption on Gmail is a rather drawn-out, 4-step process. .

After both you and the email recipient have encryption enabled, heres how you send an encrypted email:

  • Select Compose.
  • Select Encrypt message contents and attachments.
  • Select Send.
  • Yahoo

Unfortunately, when it comes to Yahoos email service, theres no specific built-in encryption feature. The only way to encrypt an email on this platform is with the use of third-party plugins. One plugin you can use is The GNU Privacy Guard.

Even with this plugin, the process of encrypting emails is technical, long, and complex. We recommend you use one of the other methods outlined in this post to save time and effort.

Given that Hotmail is now Outlook, the email encryption process is covered in that subheading.

All attachments are encrypted. Recipients who access the encrypted email via the Office Message Encryption portal can view attachments in the browser.

Attachments behave differently after theyre downloaded depending on the encryption option used:

    • If you choose the Encrypt option, recipients with and Microsoft 365 accounts can download attachments without encryption from, the Outlook mobile app, or the Mail app in Windows 10. Other email accounts using a different email client can use a temporary passcode to download the attachments from the Microsoft 365 Message Encryption portal.

    • If you choose the Encrypt and Prevent Forwarding option, there are two possibilities:

    • Microsoft Office attachments such as Word, Excel or PowerPoint files remain encrypted even after theyre downloaded. This means that if the recipient downloads the attachment and sends it to someone else, the person they forwarded it to wont be able to open the attachment because they dont have permission to open it.

    How Email Encryption Works

Encryption, put simply, is no more than scrambling up the contents of a message so that only those with a key can decrypt it. Sort of like those puzzles you did in school where every letter of the alphabet had to be converted to some other letter of the alphabet so as to decode the final message. Computers make the scrambling far more complex and impossible for a human to crack by hand. When you encrypt an email, its contents are scrambled, and only the recipient has the key to unscramble it.

To make sure only the intended recipient can decrypt the message, email encryption uses something called public key cryptography. Each person has a pair of keysthe digital codes that allow you to encrypt and decrypt messages. Your public key is stored on a key server where anyone can find it, along with your name and email address. Conversely, you can find other peoples public keys on keyservers to send them encrypted email.

When you encrypt an email, you use the recipients public key to scramble the message. Due to the technology behind this type of cryptography, the public key cannot be used to decrypt it. The email can then only be decrypted by the recipients private key, which is stored somewhere safe and private on his or her computer.

Note that you cannot send encrypted email to someone without access to their public key. Well talk about a couple different types of email encryption and explain how key sharing works in each.

Humans have been encrypting sensitive information since Roman times. Even though Roman ciphers are a far cry from modern encryption algorithms, they accomplish the same goal: convert information into secret code that hides its true meaning.

Imagine that your inbox is as safe and your emails are important documents that you don’t want anyone else to see. Without email encryption, all that cybercriminals need to do to read the content of your emails is to know the right password to your inbox.

Unfortunately, large-scale data breaches are becoming increasingly common, and there’s a chance that cybercriminals already know the password to your inbox. Even if they don’t, they can attempt to intercept your emails while they’re being delivered.
