Notifying government agencies can work to protect other citizens from a similar fate, as public awareness campaigns help to alert others to the scam. Online Marketplace Purchase Scams

Online transactions, whether you are the buyer or the seller, require caution to make sure you avoid scams. This is particularly true if you are engaging in a person-to-person transaction, perhaps through Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist or eBay rather than purchasing through an online store.

When you are buying items advertised online, make sure that the seller actually has possession of the goods being sold, and hasnt just copied photos someone else has posted online. If possible, view the product in-person before purchasing, but take appropriate safety precautions including meeting in a safe, well populated place and bringing a friend.

If you must purchase an item without viewing the item in person, take additional precautions:

Ask for additional photos of the item to make sure the seller has the item. Ask for specific photos or for a photo of the item with a piece of paper with the current date or a specific message.

If possible, purchase the item through a website that offers protections to buyers and sellers, or use a payment mechanism that offers buyer protections.

Scammers sometimes set up their own fake escrow service, so do not rely on an escrow service suggested by the seller unless you have thoroughly researched it.

Fake Websites And Other Internet Scams

If you need to apply for an eTA, be careful when you deal with companies that claim to offer help to get one. These companies are not working with the Government of Canada. Many have websites that charge a fee for information and submitting eTA applications.

This Government of Canada website is the official place to apply for an eTA.

Its easy for criminals to copy a real website or build one that looks professional. Websites may claim to be official Government of Canada sites or their partners. Others may claim to offer special immigration deals or guaranteed high-paying jobs. They do this to trick people into paying them money.

Some of these sites may try to get you to give them your private information. This could be used to steal your identity.

Here are some things to watch for:

If the website claims to offer special deals to people who want to immigrate, dont deal with them. Dont pay for offers of guaranteed entry into Canada or faster processing of your application. These claims are false.
Check the address in your browsers address bar when you land on a website. It should match the address you typed.

Report Scams To Third Parties

You may want to report the scam to organizations outside of the government. Third parties may be able to get your money back or remove fraudulent charges.

Report a scam that happened with an online seller or a payment transfer system to the companys fraud department.

If you used your credit card or bank account to pay a scammer, report it to the card issuer or bank. Also report scams to the major credit reporting agencies. Place a fraud alert on your credit report to prevent someone from opening credit accounts in your name.
