How To Remove My Email From Spam

Only Accept Emails From Known Senders

How to Remove Unwanted And Spam Emails from Gmail

Arguably the most effective way how to stop spam emails is to only accept emails from known senders. However, not all email services will let you do this easily.

In Gmail, your best option is to set up a filter that only looks for emails that are not from the intended recipients. The same is true for Yahoo Mail.

Outlook.com users can go to Settings -> View all Outlook settings -> Mail -> Junk email -> Filters. There, select the Only trust email from addresses in my Safe senders and domains list and Safe mailing lists checkbox.

Lottery Scams And Fake Offers

Sometimes, cyber thieves use old-school scams that might seem legitimate but are fake offers. These play on your desires or good nature: You’ve won a lot of money or someone urgently needs your help.

In reality, you havent won a lottery or a cruise around the world. And you havent been selected by a foreign prince to receive $10 million, in exchange for the use of your bank account number.

Look for phrases of urgency like, Immediate, and Act Now in the emails title to avoid lottery scams and fake offers. Refer back to the Delete Emails section of this post for additional characteristics to look for.

What About Ok Spam

According to Google, Gmail automatically filters out spam by moving such messages to the spam folder. If you want to allow some emails that might be labeled as spam to make it into your inbox, you can create filters that bypass the spam label.

You essentially create an approved sender list of what Google might traditionally classify as spam. This could be a message you have long-awaited, even something from a potential employer. Gmail can group messages not meant to reach spam folders as actual spam, and that can lead to “lost mail” someone said they sent.

To do this, find the message in your spam folder and click the button to report that its not spam. These messages will once again find their way to your inbox, even if your spam filter might have normally caught them.

What Is Spam And Why We Get It

Spam emails are any unsolicited messages that are sent by email. The very first spam email was sent in 1978 to 600 people, and it wasnt intended to cause any harm. Today, spam emails account for nearly half of all email traffic worldwide, and they fall into several different categories: advertising, phishing scams, 419 scams, adult content, malware, and others.

What all categories of spam email have in common is the reason why they are sent: to make money. Even though spammers receive only 1 reply for every 12,500,000 emails sent, they can still earn up to $7,000 per day because over 14 billion spam messages are sent on a daily basis.

You might think that sending countless spam email messages every day is a terrible job, regardless of how much it pays, but thats really not the case. Spammers use sophisticated tools to automate their work and launch massive spam email campaigns with a click of a button. The only thing spammers struggle with is finding valid email addresses.

Thats why they often purchase massive email databases from websites that dont care about the privacy of their visitors or purchase long lists of email addresses on digital black markets from hackers who have obtained them illegally. The next time you sign up for an email subscription, keep in mind that your email address may end up offered for sale somewhere on the internet.

Create A Secondary Email Address

How To Automatically Delete Unwanted Email From Gmail

Many unwanted messages make their way to your inbox when you order a product or are required to provide your email address to download a particular file. When you do this, some companies automatically sign you up to receive unwanted additional marketing and promotional emails. Signing up and registering with websites using your personal or business email can lead to excess spam in your inbox.

One workaround for this is to create a secondary email address that you use solely for certain online activities, like online shopping, sign-ups and subscriptions. While a secondary email address wont stop spam from appearing, it will ensure those unwanted emails are sent to your alternative email address instead of your primary account, keeping your main inbox free from clutter.

How To Unsubscribe From Spam Emails

If a reputable company sent you a spam email, you can unsubscribe from that company’s messages by clicking the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email. Taking this action might take your name off the list immediately, or it could take you to a website where you have to click a confirmation button.

Some shady companies, however, will continue to send you messages even after you try to unsubscribe. You can report spam email to your email provider and also to the sender’s email provider . Be sure to include the entire spam email and say that you’re complaining about spam.

Use An Alternative Email Address

A lot of unwanted messages make their way into your inbox when you order a product or subscribe to a mailing listand then the company automatically signs you up to receive unwanted marketing updates or shares your contact information with an advertiser. One workaround for this problem is to create a secondary email address you can use for some of these web activities, such as online shopping or hotel booking.

While another email address wont stop spam from arriving, those unwanted messages will appear in a secondary email account rather than your primary one, keeping your main inbox free from clutter. If you already use Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Outlook, or Mail.com, then you can set up a decoy account for free, following the same process you used to establish your original account.

Why is this helpful? It means you can enter a variation on your current email address whenever you sign up for or buy something, and then create a filter to corral anything sent to that address in its own folder. To create a filter in Gmail, click the Options button on the top right, followed by See all Settings and then Filters and blocked addresses. Click Create a new filter, enter your tweaked address in the To field, and then decide what you want to do with these types of emails. You could mark them as read immediately, archive them, slap a shared label on them, or some combination of these actions.

Your Email Content Triggers Spam Filters

When it comes to the actual content of your emails, there are a couple of things that are particularly good at triggering spam filters:

  • Too many spam trigger words

Specific words are often associated with spam words like free, easy money, no-cost, and risk-free.

Overusing exclamation marks, capital letters, and emojis are also considered spam triggers.

  • Misleading links

Spam filters are alarmed by links that go to unsafe websites, are associated with malware, or where the display URL doesnt match the destination URL.

  • Attachments

Attachments are one of the main ways malware is distributed, so they very quickly alert spam filters.

Plus, theyll slow down the loading time of your emails which can annoy users, edging them towards the spam button.

  • Too many images and too little text

To avoid getting flagged for spam trigger words, spammers started using images instead of text.

Because of this, spam filters are now very suspicious when one large, or many small, images are used with very little text.

  • A deceiving subject line

Spammers often send spam with a deceptive subject line that doesnt match the content to trick recipients into opening their emails.

For example, Are you available for dinner on Tuesday?, RE: Work deadline, or Your Order is Being Processed.

  • Incorrect spelling or grammar

Most spam is riddled with spelling and grammar errors spammers often use machine translations to translate their emails into English.

Many items that we think of as spamsuch as newsletters and emails about dealsdo aim to make your life better. However, these well-intentioned messages add up, cluttering up your inbox until they become stressful. Rather than deleting them en masse, look for unsubscribe links to stop receiving emails from that source.

These links usually appear down at the bottom of an emailbecause most of the time, the sender doesnt really want you to unsubscribe. If you do take time to hunt down these links, they often direct you to a page that asks you to confirm your decision. Once you do so, most sources will respect your wishes and remove you from their mailing lists. For Gmail users, this process is even easier, because if Gmail detects an unsubscribe link in the body text, it displays that link prominently at the top of the email. You can enjoy the same automated action in the Mail app on iOSit will copy any unsubscribe link in the body text and display it at the top of the email, near the toolbar.

    What Are Spam Emails

Spam emails are emails sent to you without your knowledge or consent, which often contain marketing. It is email that you dont want and didnt ask for, and its content can cause annoyance, embarrassment and even distress. However, its worth remembering that the sender generally doesnt target recipients personally. The same spam email can be sent to millions of people at the same time and the addresses can often be guessed.

What To Do After Youve Gotten Your Spam Under Control

How To Permanently Delete SPAM Email In Your Gmail Inbox

Once youve put in place all the measures youcan to keep spam out of your email, you will likely want to get rid of all thejunk mail that was already in your inbox.

One way to do this is to find the spam through the search mechanism in your inbox and delete the emails in bulk.

For most email clients, you will be able to see the senders email address at the top of the message. Copy this email or copy the part of the address to grab the domain that was sending you spam.

Paste this into the search field in your inbox to pull up all of the emails sent from that address, then click the bulk select option and the trashcan or delete button in your inbox.

If you have several pages of spam from the address you may have to repeat this until all of the emails are clear, but this typically is not a challenging process. If youre deleting spam from several different sources you will have to repeat the process for each email domain.

Another way to pull up all of your old spam is to use the search shortcut from your inbox main page. Highlight the spam email in your inbox by right-clicking on the subject with your mouse or pressing Control and selecting the subject on your keyboard.

Select Find emails from sender in the dropdown menu. This will similarly bring up all of the emails sent from that address. Use the same bulk delete function to clear your inbox of old spam.
