Why Do Spammers Send You Spam That Appears To Be From You
Sending email to you that appears to be from you is an increasingly popular Spamming trick. As spam filters get more and more complicated, people have taken to adding their own email addresses and/or the their domain names to their spam filtering allow lists. The intention is to ensure that no email from other people in their organization is ever caught in the spam filter by mistake because no one in their domain is sending spam, right?
The problem is that as soon as you add your own email address or domain name to your spam filtering allow list, all email from these addresses will sail through your spam filters . This includes all Spam email where the sender address is forged to appear to be from you. It is not really from you, but the only thing that the Spam filters allow lists care about is whether the From address is on your allow list or not.
So, users who see that their spam filters are being ineffective against email that appears to be from themselves probably have their email address or domain name on their own allow list and thus have exempted all of that email from filtering.

Email services automatically classify messages as spam if they look spammy. And in general, they do a pretty good job. But those filters arent perfect, and occasionally you may see messages you want getting sent to the spam folder.
When All Else Fails Unsubscribe

This was a large part of what I spent a chunk of time doing, unsubscribing from emails I had admittedly subscribed to at some point.
For one reason or another, these emails may no longer be relevant, and this is where something I call “the purge” comes into play. Go through your emails and unsubscribe from every email account you wish to no longer hear from this will help you steer clear of unwanted junk mail from these senders in the future.
It might take a few rounds to get it right, but this casual chore will eventually pay off, both for desktop and mobile devices.

What Is Your Email Account Has Been Reported For Spam Abuse Email Scam
“Your email account has been reported for spam abuse” is the name of a phishing spam campaign. These scam emails claim that unless recipients verify their email accounts – they will be terminated.
It must be emphasized that these letters are fake, and none of their claims are true. This spam mail aims to steal recipients’ email accounts’ log-in credentials.
What Is A Blacklist
Simply put, a blacklist is a list of IP addresses that have been involved in malicious activity, such as sending spam, emails that contain viruses, etc.
There are two types of blacklists: internal and external.
Internal is usually a blacklist owned by a mailbox provider. For example, an IP could get on a Gmails or Yahoos blacklist.
External is a blacklist owned by a third party. Mailbox providers may use services of an external blacklist, and to delist, one would need to contact a third party, rather than a mailbox provider, who uses this blacklist.
Each blacklist uses its own criteria for listing the IP addresses of email spammers. Those criteria can include a variety of factors: technical, policy, and evidence-based.
- Technical listings occur mostly because of mail server configuration issues .
- Policy listings happen because the receiving server does not wish to receive emails from certain countries, or ISPs, that have a history of not handling unsubscribe requests.
- Evidence-based listings are those where the server has received direct evidence that the sending IP address has been involved in sending unsolicited emails.
Mailbox providers tend to protect their users from spam and choose which of the blacklists they use. To determine whether or not an incoming email is spam, mailbox providers look at various characteristics of the email including the IP address the email is sent from.
IP blacklist removal has 4 basic stages:

Report Emails As Not Spam
1. Go to the Gmail website on a Mac or PC, or open the Gmail app on your phone, and log in to your account, if necessary.
2. Go into the Spam folder and open the email you want to move to your primary inbox.
3. Select Report not spam at the top of the message whether you’re using the desktop website or the mobile app.
4. If this box doesn’t appear on mobile, tap the three dots in the top-right corner and then select Not spam.
After a few instances, this will also teach Gmail not to mark messages like this as spam in the future.
The Evolution Of Internet Spam
The technique of sending unsolicited bulk advertising content via mail most commonly known as spamming made its debut in the mid-1990s. Its when the commercial use of the internet became possible. The first known email spam was sent by Gary Theurk of Digital Equipment Corporation to hundreds of users on ARPANET on May 3, 1978.
Today, spam makes a vast majority of the total email sent. According to a report by Statistica, junk mails accounted for a total of 53.5% of email traffic worldwide with China as the biggest contributor to spam emails with 14.35% of total spam volume.

What To Do After Youve Gotten Your Spam Under Control
Once youve put in place all the measures youcan to keep spam out of your email, you will likely want to get rid of all thejunk mail that was already in your inbox.
One way to do this is to find the spam through the search mechanism in your inbox and delete the emails in bulk.
For most email clients, you will be able to see the senders email address at the top of the message. Copy this email or copy the part of the address to grab the domain that was sending you spam.
Paste this into the search field in your inbox to pull up all of the emails sent from that address, then click the bulk select option and the trashcan or delete button in your inbox.
If you have several pages of spam from the address you may have to repeat this until all of the emails are clear, but this typically is not a challenging process. If youre deleting spam from several different sources you will have to repeat the process for each email domain.
Another way to pull up all of your old spam is to use the search shortcut from your inbox main page. Highlight the spam email in your inbox by right-clicking on the subject with your mouse or pressing Control and selecting the subject on your keyboard.
Select Find emails from sender in the dropdown menu. This will similarly bring up all of the emails sent from that address. Use the same bulk delete function to clear your inbox of old spam.
Change Your Email Address
If the spam keeps on rolling in, it could mean your email address was exposed in a data breach. It can be hard to prevent spam when cybercriminals have your information. One option in this case is to change your email address.
With free email services like Gmail, it’s easy to create multiple accounts so you can limit the spam that appears in your primary inbox. Heres how:

But Are Not Dkim Or Spf Good Enough
It is true that DKIM and SPF can be used to block email send from servers that are not authorized to send email from your domain however, not everyone is willing to allow their filters to be so harsh as to block all messages that fail SPF or DKIM tests as that can happen for many different reasons. As a result, failed SPF and DKIM checks commonly make a message more spam-like, but do not always force the message to be considered spam. Contact your filtering provider if you want to update your spam filter so that SPF or DKIM failures will cause the message to be rejected.

Why Am I Suddenly Getting A Lot Of Spam Emails
Spammers usually buy email addresses from special providers in bulk to add them to their mailing lists. If youve noted a sudden increase in the number of spam emails landing in your account, theres a high chance that your address was part of a list recently sold to one or more scammers. This usually happens when you enter your email in a field that looks safe but is actually a tool used by scammers to harvest email addresses.

Ways To Stop Spam From Invading Your Email

Short of cutting yourself off from the Internet, theres no way to eliminate spam entirely. The best you can do is filter out most of it, and even that has some unfortunate consequences.
Your email client almost certainly filters spam, moving suspicious messages to a separate folder. But its not perfect. Some spam tricks the filter and ends up in your inbox. And some legitimate messages, called false positives, end up in the spam folder.
While we cant remove these errors entirely, we can reduce them.
