Split Up Files Into Multi

If youd still like to send your file via email, then you can take steps to split your file up into smaller parts. For instance, if you had a 15 MB document that you needed to email, you could opt to use file compression software like 7-Zip to create an archive containing that file, splitting it into two 7.5 MB pieces.

There are step-by-step instructions for splitting up larger files into smaller parts over on the How-To Geek blog.

You could then attach each of the individual pieces to separate emails, remembering to alert the recipient that youre doing this. The recipient would have to download each attachment separately and then use a file extraction program to extract the larger, divided-up file, and piece it back together.

This method works but is pretty time-consuming. There is one other option, though.

Alternatives To Using Email

The universal nature of email is still a huge feature compared to other services you dont need to ask anyone what software or system theyre on before sending files to them. However many people find that dedicated file applications are a better option when frequently sharing files with the same recipient or group.

  • Social networks and photo sharing sites such as Facebook, Google+, Flickr, Picasa and Instagram. These sites will usually let you organise photos into albums, and set access permissions for different people. They tend to be better suited for sharing photos on a periodic, social basis, instead of sharing a lot of photos at once.
  • Messaging services such as Skype can often transfer files, however this usually requires that the other user is online at the same time.
  • Using online storage services such as , Microsoft OneDrive, Apple iCloud Photo Sharing and Dropbox outside of email. These services are designed to make files easily accessible, and can be very efficient when each party is using them to the full extent .

Ifyou’re using image file attachments, you can use Microsoft Outlooks automaticresizing feature to reduce the size of the image. To use the feature, click theFile tab on the top left of yourmessage window. Youll see the following screen:

Clickthe toggle button to the left of the Resizelarge images when I send this message to have Outlook automatically resizeyour image files.

Note: The image files are resized when you clickthe Send button. So, in the exampleabove you still wouldnt be able to add the additional file.

Toget an idea of how much the image sizes were reduced, heres a look at the sentmessage:

As you can see, even the largest file which was 5 MB,Regional .jpg, is now only 284 KB .

The automatic resizing feature only works whenthe photo images are attached to your email message and sent. If youveembedded theimages into your message, they cant be resized using this method. So, you won’t be able to send a large image file with this method. But it can reduce the size of the images you’re sending, which increases the likelihood that they’ll be accepted by the recipient’s email system.
