Scam Checks Via Email
I’m in contact with an individual who wants to send me money. I’m wary about this so I decided to ask here.
He wants to email me a photo of a check and for me to use that to deposit money into my account. I don’t plan to click any links and I’m going to mouse over every link to double check. He hasn’t asked for any personal details , only for my email address. I haven’t received the picture yet so that’s all the information I have.
Does this sound suspicious? I have an inkling it might be a scam but decided to see it through a little farther.
UPDATE: They want me to deposit the check and send them a picture of the deposit confirmation. Off the top of my head I seem to remember having that contain some sensitive information.

Assuming your bank lets you deposit checks from home, then you will likely only need to prepare your check by endorsing the back. You might have to write some other information such to what account the check is being deposited. Your bank will let you know what to write.
Locate the deposit option on your banking app.
You may also need to enter how much youre depositing and, if you have more than one account, to which the funds are going.
Once youve squared all that away, you will capture the front of the check, and then the back.
It is best to use a dark-colored background and hold the phone as still as possible so you get it right the first time.
Send both sides on their way to your bank and make sure you get confirmation that the check has been successfully received. If you get a confirmation number, its best to write that down in case something goes awry.

Much ado has been made in recent years about being able to deposit checks to your bank accounts using your phones camera. It works well and is super convenient, so if your banks app offers this feature you may want to try it out.
One of the first things you need to find out is if your bank even offers an official app , which might allow you to deposit checks from home. Word of warning: always use the official app and when you deposit checks, and make sure you dont use it on an open Wi-Fi network.
Another thing you want to verify what kind of checks you can deposit. For example, you can probably deposit a variety of check types such as cashiers, travelers, money orders, and more.
Also, make sure you know what your maximum daily amount is. If you have more to deposit than youre allowed, you may have to actually go into your bank or space your deposits out over a few days.
Finally, make sure you know when your funds will be available. You and your bank should have some kind of depository agreement in place, and funds may not be immediately available. Remember, any deposit wont be officially complete until your bank actually collects the money.
Echeck Vs Wire Transfer
eCheck is an abbreviation of “electronic check,” and is more of payment instead of a process. These electronic checks are now being used to replace traditional paper checks. Wire transfers move money from one bank to another, but unlike ACH’s, they do not occur in batch but manually one transaction at a time.

Is Mobile Check Deposit Safe
If youre concerned about protecting your banking information online, you may be wondering whether mobile check deposit is safe to use. The short answer is that mobile check deposit is as secure as your other online and mobile banking functions.
This means if your bank is taking steps to protect your information, such as using encryption and enhanced security measures, then mobile check deposit should be protected in the same ways. The main threats to mobile banking security are the same as those for online and mobile banking in general.
For example, its possible to be targeted with a remote deposit capture scam, in which youre asked to deposit a fraudulent check using mobile deposit. You can protect yourself against this type of fraud by only accepting paper checks from people you know and trust.
If youre concerned about security risks with mobile banking deposit, there are other ways to safeguard your information, including:
- Avoiding the use of public Wi-Fi to access your banking details
- Using a virtual private network to access your accounts away from home
- Relying on unique passwords and updating them regularly
- Using an online password keeper to protect your passwords
- Setting up multifactor authentication to log in to your bank accounts
- Locking your mobile device using a unique pincode or biometric identification
Why Is My Mobile Check Deposit Taking So Long
Depositing a check electronically from your mobile device has been reported having caused a delay due to a longer time frame between when the deposit was made and when the funds were made available. In certain situations, people make mobile checks after 6 p.m. If you want to send money to one of the largest banks, you must use Pacific time at least until two business days after you receive your payment.
