How to Use Gmail (FREE) for Your Custom Domain Email Address

Maybe you run a larger organization and would rather use GSuite to better manage your companies email. Or perhaps you want some of Googles excellent collaboration features to use within your team. If thats you, heres how to set that up.

  • Visit the GSuite site here and choose a free trial plan that fits you.
  • Click Get Started, fill out your information, then enter your domain name if youve already purchased one.
  • Enter the email credentials that youll use to log in to your account.
  • Enter your payment info.
  • Now you just need to verify youre the owner of your domain name. Google should provide plenty of options. The easiest way is probably either to edit the header of your website to put the code in or to add a text record using Bluehost.
  • Youre done! Just log into your GSuite account and manage as many email addresses with your custom domain that you need.

    The migration process from your existing provider to Zoho Mail is simple, and you can create custom domain email accounts for all of your employees with no downtime.

    • Step 1: Add and verify your domain, or buy a new domain with Zoho.

    • Step 2: Add users and create custom domain email accounts Import users from a CSV file or from your Active Directory.

    • Step 3: Create domain-based email accounts for groups, using distribution lists to allow multiple members to receive emails from common accounts like info@yourdomain.com or contact@yourdomain.com.

    • Step 4: Configure your domain’s MX records to point to Zoho Mail servers, so you can start receiving emails to your domain accounts in Zoho.

      The overall process for creating an email at your domain is the same no matter which hosting company you are using, but the exact steps will differ since each hosts control panel is a bit different. Siteground and Bluehost are the two most common hosts, and the ones I personally recommend, so this tutorial will focus specifically on how to create an email at your domain in Siteground and Bluehost. Ill walk you through the exact steps separately per host below.

      How To Make Your Own Email Address With Your Own Domain Name And Gmail

      If you want your email address to be something like instead of , then follow these steps. For this example were looking at Bluehost, but the process is similar with other web-hosting providers discussed further down the page.

    • Log in to your Bluehost. From the side navigation of the Bluehost dashboard, click the Email and Office tab.
    • Select Google Workspace as your email provider.
    • You have the freedom to choose your desired business email address based on your own domain.
    • Fill out the necessary information about your business.
    • Set the number of users and click add to cart.
    • After following these steps you should have a custom email from Gmail.

      I also assumed you already have a hosting provider. My website is currently set up with Bluehost. So Ill be using Bluehost to illustrate how to set this up.

      However, the general steps should be the same even if youre not using Bluehost. Most hosts provide email capabilities and thats what well be using Bluehost for. If you dont have a hosting provider, you can set this up for free with Zoho Mail.

      Using Your Domain Name In Gmail

      Before I show you how to integrate into gmail, I want to give you a heads up on how it works.

      You can add aliases to your gmail account so if you have a variety of domain names, you can integrate them all into your gmail. If you receive an email from someone using your new alias, when you hit reply, your gmail account will automatically send from the same domain name as long as you have set up the incoming and outgoing server details correctly.

      Youll also be able to select which account you send from if youre creating a new email to send out from your domain or you can set it as your default so that it always comes up as the chosen domain email address.

      So lets get your domain name added to your gmail.

      Verify Your Domain Name With Google Workspace

      Next, youll need to verify your domain name with Google Workspace by adding something called a TXT record. Depending on how you have things configured, you can do this at either:

      • Your web host
      • The place where you registered your domain name

      Google Workspace will provide detailed instructions for most popular hosts/registrars.

      Set Up Mail Forwarding In Godaddy

    • Sign in to your GoDaddy account to get to your Workspace Control Center.
    • Click on the Create Forward button at the top of the user account list.
    • In the forwarding screen, enter your own domain email address in the Forward this email address field. Include the following, check the Emailbox.
    • Enter Your Gmail address in the To these email addresses field.
    • Click on the Create button.

      Here is the difference between Gmail and :

      Allow Gmail To Send Emails Using Smtp

      At this point, new emails to your custom domain should show up in your Gmail account. However, you wont be able to reply to them from your custom email domain yet.

      To fix that, you need to configure your Gmail account to send through your custom emails SMTP server. Typically, youll find your emails SMTP server information at the same spot where you found the POP3 information:

      Once you have your SMTP information:

    • Go back to the Accounts and Import area in your Gmail accounts settings.
    • Find the Send mail as setting.
    • Click Add another email.
    • This will open another popup window that has multiple steps.

      On the first screen:

      • Enter the custom email address that youre using.
      • Check the box for Treat as an alias.

      Next, enter the SMTP information from your email host:

      • SMTP Server and Port from your email host.
      • Username normally, this is your full email address, but sometimes its only the part that comes before @.
      • Password the password that you set when creating your custom email address.
      • Choose whichever Secured connection method that Gmail recommends.
      • Click Add Account.

      Gmail will then send a confirmation code to your custom email address. You need to click the link in that email and click Confirm to finish the process.

      Since you already configured Gmail to receive emails from your custom domain name, you should be able to receive this email from your Gmail account. It might take a few minutes for Gmail to fetch the email from your server.

      What Are Spf Dkim And Dmarc Records

      • SPF is a protocol for validating email, which is designed to find and block email spoofing.
      • DKIM is a method for authenticating email. It enables a receiver to know that email was sent and authorized by the domain author.
      • DMARC is a protocol for email authentication. It is specifically designed to give email owners the ability to safeguard their domain from unauthorized use. It is important set SPF, DKIM, and DMARC for your email accounts to avoid spoofing and spam.

      Enable Gmail To Work With Your Custom Domain Email

      This option allows you to enjoy all the great features that come with a regular Gmail account while sending emails from your custom domain email address for free. Before you can do this, youll need to first have email hosting from a provider that allows email forwarding . Once youve done that, youll sign up with Gmail, forward the emails to that account, and enable Gmail to send as your custom domain email address.

      Youll see a page like this. Next you need to enter some DNS settings on Google Domains. This will kill two birds with one stone proving to Mailgun that you own the domain, and setting up the SPF & DKIM records used to validate email sent through your domain.

      Note: SPF& DKIM records are used to verify the email that was sent from your domain really came from you and isnt being spoofed by a spammer. They are required by Mailgun, but this is the main reason we are using Mailgun in the first place. 🙂

      5. Add the SPF record. On Google Domains, click the DNS icon. Scroll down to Custom resource records at the bottom.

      Enter the settings found on Mailgun like so, then click Add.
