Was My Email Delivered And Opened
A question that I hear frequently from my clients, and in the Salesforce Answers Community, is how do I know if my email got through and did my client open my email? There are a few places to look on the Lead and Contact record to find this information as well as two pre-canned reports.
First, lets look at the question about email deliverability how do I know if my email got through? If you navigate to the Contacts tab , and you scroll down to the very bottom of the page youll see a Reports section. Here youll find a Bounce report, which when you run it, will tell you if Salesforce experienced any deliverability issues.
For Contacts :
If you run the report and see no results, ensure that youre filtering to see All Leads . Below are some sample deliverability reasons that you might encounter. For a complete list of bounce reasons, see the bottom of this post.
Another good idea is to check to see if Salesforce is setup to track these errors by going to Setup > Administration Setup > Email Administration > and then configure the Bounce Administration section displayed to the right of the page.
Once activated, and youre email does bounce, youll see a message by the email field on the record.
The other method is to run the native HTML Email Status report. Under the Reports tab its found under the Activities folder.
However you can make your own Bounce report from scratch. First Start by creating a normal Accounts and Contact report.

Google Workspace offers an outdated read receipt in Gmail format for its customers that is very similar to Outlooks one back in the 1990s, with a concept and technology that is difficult to work with, and not reliable. Besides, it is not available to Gmail users. The best option, which we will show you afterwards, is to use an extension like Mailtrack for Gmail to see if someone has read your email.

You may find your email provider offers the option to request a read receipt when you send an email. If you are unable to locate this feature, setting up read receipts is quick and straightforward on popular platforms like Outlook, Mozilla and Gmail.
Microsoft makes requesting a read receipt very simple. Open up Outlook and click on new email to compose your message. When you are ready to send click Options in the top toolbar and click Request a Read Receipt. You can make the additional selection to have a delivery receipt sent to you as well. These two features will ensure you know when the email was received and opened.
To enable return receipts in Mozillas Thunderbird, go into the program and click the three-line menu. Choose Options and then Account Settings.
Tap Return Receipts, click Customize return receipts for this account and checkmark When sending messages, always request a return receipt. Depending on your needs, you may want to select other options as well.
Unfortunately, the basic version of Gmail does not allow you to request a read receipt. You must be a Google G Suite premium user and have administrative rights to the account.
To enable read receipts in G Suite head over to the Admin Console. Click Apps then tap on G Suite. Select the Gmail option and click on User settings.
Click Email Read Receipts to edit the feature.

Request A Return Receipt
Once you learn how to know if someone opened your email, you might be surprised at the number of people who read your emails and just decide to go mum. Another way, rather than the one mentioned above, to know what really happens to your emails after hitting send is to enable the option to request return/read receipts with the email that you send.
But, you have to bear this in mind: these requests only do half the job. Your recipient might decide to decline the requests. That means you wont be getting the receipt responses to the emails you sent. Also, there are email platforms though that dont allow to track whether the emails were opened and read or not.
Lets take a look at how to activate the receipt features in Outlook and Gmail G-suite platforms:

If you don’t see this setting, it means you either don’t have a work or school account. Or, you have a work/school account, but your admin hasn’t enabled read receipts. Ask your admin to Make read receipts available.

The Benefits Of Email Tracking
There are many benefits to tracking email opens:
- It reduces the need for follow-up emails you already know if the recipient has opened your email.
- If recipients consistently dont open your emails, you can cut down how many you send in the future.
- Tracking in real-time? You can send follow-up emails when you know the recipient is in their email inbox.
- If you know that someone has opened up your email several times in one day, theyre likely to be interested in what youre emailing them about. You can then strike while the iron is hot.
Benefits of Email Tracking for Business Theres no denying the massive impact that email can have on growing your business. Email marketing yields an average ROI of 4,300% and is especially useful when targeting new customers.
Unfortunately, there are many reasons youre likely not seeing that return on investment. For one, your emails probably arent reaching their inbox, and you likely wont realize it unless youre tracking them.
Email ROI is 100% about deliverability. Its imperative to find out if your emails are getting bounced by the recipients email provider or if theyre getting marked as spam. Email tracking also helps you make smarter business decisions when growing your pipeline.
Knowing key factors like when your recipient opened the email, how many times, and what content they engaged with can help you personalize your responses and optimize your email campaign cadence.
