Send Large Files With Outlook

Youll receive an error message if you attempt to attach files larger than the maximum size limit. There are a few ways to work around this size limit, including using a file sharing service or compressing the file.

Outlook limits the size of files you can send. This limit prevents your computer from continually trying to upload very large attachments that exceed the limits of most Internet service providers. For Internet email account. such as Outlook.com or Gmail, the combined file size limit is 20 megabytes and for Exchange accounts , the default combined file size limit is 10 MB.

Onedrive: For Outlook And Outlookcom

When you try to attach one or more files that are over 33MB in size, Outlook.com will prompt you to upload the files to your OneDrive account. If you follow this prompt, the file gets uploaded to the OneDrive Email attachments folder. The recipient will receive a link to the file instead of the file. You can also share a file from OneDrive with a limit of 2GB.

Once the file gets uploaded, choose if people can edit the file or only view it. Select Change permissions and decide what you want to do with a file you just shared. There are two options you can choose from.

  • Recipient can view: Others can copy or download your file without signing in.
  • Recipient can edit: Others can edit, add or delete files in a shared folder.

Your Friends Won’t Thank You For Sending Them Multiple

    ByPaul Monckton, Contributor| 22 Aug 2014

Your friends won’t thank you for sending them multiple-megabyte photo collections over email, so what do you do when you need to email a large attachment? Here’s how to send large file attachments.

A reader wrote into Helproom to ask: “Im running Windows 7 on my PC and Ive zipped a folder containing 125MB of pictures. When I try to send the folder as an attachment, it tells me the file is too big. Have I done something wrong or do I have to send them in smaller batches? Is there a maximum file size I can send in one go via email?”

This is how we solved their problem. Also see: What’s the best free email service?

A 125MB file is most certainly too large for sending as an email attachment. Email really isnt designed to cope well with large files and most email providers impose strict limits on the maximum size of a single attachment. For example, Gmail imposes a limit of 25MB per file, which is on the generous side.

You can check online to find the maximum size supported by your provider, but this is only half of the issue. The person or persons to whom you are sending your file will also have a limit on the maximum size of an attachment they can receive and this limit may well be lower than your own.

Furthermore, if youre using an email client such as Microsoft Outlook, this may impose its own limits on file size.

Google Drive and Dropbox both have their own desktop apps which sync with the cloud making file sharing even easier.

If youre looking for a more traditional, do-it-yourself method, you can split your file up into smaller parts. For example, if you had a 50MB file you wanted to emailor even a collection of large filesyou could use a file compression program like 7-Zip to create an archive, and then split the archive into five 10MB pieces.

After splitting the archive, you can then attach all the separated pieces to separate emails. The recipient will need to download each attachment, and then use a file extraction program to extract the larger, complete file from the separate archives.

While it can be a bit cumbersome, this traditional method still works as well as it always did. Some recipients might be confused by the separate attachmentsor at least wont enjoy jumping through hoops to reassemble them. If youre not sure whether your recipient will know how to do this, its probably better to choose an easier method.
