What To Do If You Accidentally Hit The Delete Button On An Important Message In Gmail

We’ve all been there you’re in the middle of sorting through your inbox or replying to an important email when you accidentally hit the wrong button and delete something that you didn’t mean to. Suddenly, that long email chain full of vital information is consigned to oblivion.

This can be embarrassing and annoying but thankfully, it isn’t the end of the world, especially if you’re using Gmail, which has a couple of built-in mechanisms to stop this from happening. These tools can also help you to recover emails that you’ve deleted on purpose but then need to retrieve at a later date.

It should be noted, however, that these safety mechanisms aren’t foolproof, and not every deleted email can be successfully recovered. It’s good practice to ensure that you make a note of any important information outside of your email inbox, just in case anything happens to it.

The Contents Of My Inbox Disappeared Can I Recover

The contents of my inbox disappeared! Can I recover?

Ive received this question more than once about both Outlook and Outlook Express. There isnt enough information in the questions to pull together The Answer, but there are definitely a number of things to look at when your email or the folders containing it disappear without warning.

To answer the question directly: maybe. Depending on what happened your mail, like the truth, may still be out there.

One common confusion for both Outlooks under Windows 2000 and Windows XP is that each Windows user account gets their own set of Outlook Express mail folders by default. So if you use multiple accounts in Windows, its possible that youre simply logged into a different account, and looking at a different set of folders.

Because Outlook and Outlook Express are completely different programs, and each has some unique set of issues to look at.

    Outlook Express

Outlook Express also has the concept of Identities which is another way to manage multiple users with separate email accounts without requiring different Windows accounts. Make sure youre using the identity you think you are.

If youre running an anti-virus product Microsoft Support has a Knowledgebase article Outlook Express E-Mail Messages Are Missing from the Inbox Folder which discusses an interaction with McAfee VirusScan that can cause the problem.

Depending on your symptoms the KB article Folders Do Not Appear in the Local Folders List may also be helpful.

Are you only using the webmail to access your email? Or do you have additional devices using email client apps ?

For the webmail and all your email client apps check the filters to ensure some filter is erroneously matching and moving the matches to the archive email box. In the case of the webmail look for “sneaky” email filters with weird names like “.” .

In case you don’t know the way to get to the webmail filters is to click the gear-> settings-> filters.

Not sure what you refer to as webmail.

My original reply still applies. Check your Thunderbird and webmail filters. You don’t know what the webmail is? It’s the att/yahoo mail interface you access with your browser. Go to and click Mail in the upper right. It’s accessing the same servers you are accessing with your email client. You would see all your incoming email passing through the webmail inbox. If you delete email from the server with your Thunderbird client they will appear in the webmail trash mailbox.

You still need to check the filters in both the webmail and your Thunderbird.

Scenario : Your Exchange Account Is Set To Deliver To A Pst

How to Get Back Achieved Emails in Gmail (Easy)

With Outlook 2010 and previous, when youve configured an Exchange account and have your default delivery location set to a pst-file, then all the emails from the Inbox of the Exchange account will be downloaded into the Inbox of your pst-file. This usually happens when you have configured Outlook with a POP3 account first and then later add an Exchange account.

In order to restore your messages back to the server, you must set your Exchange account as the default delivery location in Outlook. After this, simply move back the emails into the Inbox of the Exchange mailbox and the messages will be uploaded to the server again.

This could now possibly result in your POP3 messages being downloaded into your Exchange mailbox instead of your pst-file. Depending on you version of Outlook, there are several methods to deal with this.

To verify/change your default delivery location for your Exchange account

    • Outlook 2003 Tools-> Account Settings-> button Next-> use the drop down list at the bottom to set your default delivery location
    • Outlook 2007

Emails Keep Reappearing After Being Deleted

How to delete all gmail inbox messages at once
      • 10 rĂ©ponses

Ever since the last Windows 10 update and Thunderbird update , I have been getting multiple duplicate emails. When I delete them, they are transferred to the Trash folder, but as soon as the Get Messages button is clicked, or the Inbox is refreshed automatically, they reappear in my Inbox. This happens on all my email accounts.

The problem seems to be that they are not being deleted from the mail server , despite the server settings tickbox being set to “Leave messages on server for at most 14 days or until I delete them”. I have tried unticking the “Leave messages on server” box, but that makes no difference. I also installed a “Remove duplicate messages” add-on, but again that seems to have had only limited effect.

      Any ideas?

IMAP accounts get access to see all server folders including the ‘Trash’. If you want to use IMAP, you would need to create a new existing mail account and set up as IMAP.All emails put into the imap subscribed ‘Trash’ folder should delete emails off the server when it is emptied as this is how gmail works.

Deleted emails reappearing sounds like you might have some corruption going on with Inbox.

Move all wanted emails out of Inbox and put them in a suitably named folder for storage.Delete anything you do not want. When Inbox is empty:Right click on Inbox and select ‘Compact’

Empty and then compact the ‘Junk’ folder.Compact the ‘Drafts’ folder.
